Crime rates in Toronto are in decline each year. We took a look at official information from the government to analyze data from the last decade.
Indeed, it can clearly be seen that the absolute number of police reported crime is falling.
The same is true for relative numbers as well.
However, this might not be the case for all types of crimes. Are there some crime charges that are on the rise?
A closer look at the data shows that the number of accusations for sex crime against children and for possession of drugs is higher. In order to adequately perform the analysis, we looked at the crime rate per population of 100.000 people, as such data is more comparable.
1) Sex crimes against children
It doesn’t necessarily mean that sexual criminal acts against children are now committed more than in the past, but these numbers could indicate that the system of reporting such crimes has changed.
Not only is the number of reported sexual violations against children increasing, but child pornography charges are more frequent as well.
A newer trend, which might be connected to the rise of the new technologies, is seen in the higher number of accusations of luring children via the computer.
2) Possession of drugs
Possession of drugs presents a criminal violation under the Canadian law. For the past ten years, the police has increasingly been reporting incidents of marijuana, heroin, ecstasy and crystal meth possession.
